Fostering Belonging: Bringing Adaptive Sledges to Schools in Simcoe County

What happens when innovation meets inclusion? Kids and youth of all abilities can play and participate. CTN recently equipped 10 adaptive hockey and ice sledges with wheel kits so they could be used for on and off-the-ice activities. Throughout last winter, we worked in collaboration with an occupational therapist (OT) from Closing the Gap to bring the adaptive sledges and wheel kits to local schools in Simcoe County. This idea began when one of the OT’s clients expressed a desire to play sports with their friends at school. From this initial idea, the sledges with wheel kits were brought to seven different schools in Simcoe County, each using the equipment for two weeks at a time. CTN’s Equipment Loan Program (ELP) coordinator worked with teachers at the schools to explain how to use the equipment, and they were able to integrate it into their curriculum through activities like sledge hockey and other skill-based activities. Working together with the local OT and schools, this collaboration helped kids and youth at the schools participate in sports – regardless of their age, size and ability – allowing for an inclusive opportunity and helping to create belonging for everyone.
We were thrilled to partner with CTN to have eight sledges delivered to our school for a two-week block. The students loved using them in their gym classes. Thank you for bringing this experience to our school community!

Working Together Across the Network: Supporting Families Through Collaboration

Families live, learn and connect at home, school and throughout their community. CTN’s collaborative tables help bring together partners to enable a strong connection across the network. Leaders from over 20 local organizations work together to focus on meeting family and community needs, and to create a stronger, more connected network to support service delivery. The tables engage in discussions about sector trends and day-to-day service delivery to guide our work together to support kids, youth and families.

Continuing to be a Learning Organization: Knowledge Building to Support Child Development

At CTN, we encourage kids to grow, explore and learn something new every day. We believe the same should be true for us so we can continue to provide services to families in a way that is informed by both innovation and best practice. Last year, we hosted various clinical learning days where employees and service providers came together to learn about a wide range of topics to support effective service delivery. CTN also continues to foster innovation by supporting a variety of research projects, studies and contributions at conferences. Our strong partnership with CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research prioritizes the F-words for Child Development framework into our learning and integrates function, family, fitness, fun, friends and future into our programs and services to support child development. As a learning organization, we strive to create space for everyone to grow, contribute and learn together.

Working Together for Kids: CTN Welcomes Provincial Leaders to Discuss Family-Centred Care

In November 2024, CTN welcomed the Hon. Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, along with York Region members of provincial Parliament (MPPs) Dawn Gallagher Murphy (Newmarket-Aurora) and Daisy Wai, to our Oak Ridges site in Richmond Hill. The visit recognized additional funding for the Urgent Response Service (URS) and highlighted our commitment to supporting families through efficient, collaborative care. Leaders from service organizations who deliver URS, including Your Support Services Network (YSSN), Catulpa Community Support Services, Centre for Behaviour Health Sciences - Mackenzie Health, Kinark Child and Family Services and our member association Empowered Kids Ontario, were invited to showcase the impact of coordinated service delivery. This visit was a reminder of the importance of working together to provide timely, accessible and meaningful support for kids, youth and their families.
