CTN’s Equipment Loan Program Helped Vivek Reach New Goals

Last June, Vivek and his family visited the CTN Equipment Fair to explore the different recreation equipment available to them. One of the family’s goals was for Vivek to learn how to ride a bike. It was difficult for him to do activities, like going to the park, where kids would be swinging independently, climbing ropes and riding their bicycles.

The family learned about CTN’s Equipment Loan Program (ELP) and spoke with our team about their son’s abilities and needs. At the fair, Vivek and his family were able to try out a bike that was suggested by our team to best match their goals. Within minutes of trying the adaptive bike, Vivek was peddling while the parents were able to steer and make turns for him using the steering pole. It was a pivotal moment for the family in achieving his developmental goals.

As Vivek’s skills improved, his family consulted with the ELP team to find a new piece of equipment to meet his evolving needs and allow him to ride faster.

Vivek is now learning how to steer a bicycle with the wheel stabilizer, and the family hopes that soon he will learn how to brake. With the support of our team and access to CTN’s ELP, Vivek and his family were able to reach important recreation goals. The ELP helps make adapted equipment available to families, provides education on the range of adaptive equipment available and increases opportunities for kids and their families to enjoy recreational activities.

None of this would have been possible without the CTN Equipment Loan Program.” - Vivek’s family

Championing our Work: Strong Governance to Support CTN’s Strategic Plan

As a not-for-profit organization, CTN’s dedicated volunteer Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in effective governance ensuring strategic direction, accountability and alignment with our mission and vision. This is foundational when supporting the development of kids, youth and their families. Key areas of progress over the last year included the alignment of board policies with new provincial legislation, the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, maintaining compliance and supporting the effective governance of the organization. To foster growth and support their role in guiding the organization, the Board of Directors participated in education sessions focused on governance fundamentals, digital health systems and ongoing orientation to CTN services. Lastly, a new board and committee structure was designed and implemented, which is well aligned to our strategic goals and positions CTN for long-term success. These initiatives mark a significant milestone in our journey and support continuous improvement across the network to ensure effective service delivery and accountability to the kids, youth and families we serve.

Building Inclusion: CTN’s Continued EDIIA Journey through Education and Capacity Building

Equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity, and accessibility (EDIIA) are integrated into our 2022-2027 strategic plan. We aspire to embed these principles in our priorities and culture to promote diversity, inclusion, and the removal of barriers for better access to services and opportunities for the families we serve. This past year, a key focus area has been education and capacity building through different resources and programming. An online EDIIA Resource Hub was developed for employees and service provider organizations with resources intended to support individual EDIIA learning. Over the past two years, EDIIA education sessions and small-group coffeehouses provided learning opportunities for over 1200 attendees, including employees, service providers and members of the board. This programming helped to champion EDIIA across the network by fostering meaningful connections, supporting collaboration opportunities and providing participants with a better understanding of our clients and communities.

We also hosted our first-ever Gathering Day on the Rama First Nation at Casino Rama. This day brought together 17 agencies and over 62 participants from local Indigenous organizations in Simcoe County for knowledge sharing and relationship building. Our EDIIA work is a continuous learning journey to remove barriers to equity through fostering diversity and inclusion practices. Feedback is key, and our goal is to lead in this field with a genuine and impactful approach.

Leading with Excellence: CTN’s Quality Journey

Leveraging innovative practices to build a culture of quality is important at CTN. Through the introduction of our quality plan, we developed a framework for performance and measurement across the organization to monitor quality improvement. This plan guides our work by outlining our quality goals, the framework for how we will measure performance of our progress and enhancements to how we report on our work. Through the three key streams of quality, measurement and evaluation, this framework is designed to improve the way we manage, share and use data. By leveraging data and analytics, it provides the tools and insights necessary to answer critical questions and drive evidence-informed decision-making. The quality plan demonstrates our commitment to continuous quality improvement and will help CTN achieve greater consistency in how we execute our work and provide services.
